Community Involvement
River and water management is in many cases arranged by top down planning. However, if local communities and institutions are more involved in these processes the chances of finding a successful and sustainable solution are much greater. In other words, a big step towards more sustainable land and water management is taken, if local communities are actively responsible for managing their own environment
Government agencies and official river and water management organizations normally intend to communicate the value of our shared natural resources. However, the message is in many instances lost, due to a lack of public participation particularly in the areas of river and water management. Therefore, the Community Rivers partnership is interested in developing interactive methods for participative community involvement, in areas that have been considered as highly technical and specialized.
Our objectives under this theme are as follows:
• The development of new practical methods for a more interactive involvement of local institutions and citizens in the planning and maintenance of rivers and water management.
• Exchange of knowledge and experience on the area of community participation in water management issues.
The activities carried out in the project are:
• Identify existing experience
• Identify best practice and new strategies for engaging local communities.
• Pilot projects for community involvement. Best practice strategies will be tested in the field together with other new strategies that are being developed. On the basis of these tests, all of our strategies will be evaluated for their transferability and collated in a best practice guide that can be used by community groups and organisations around Europe.
• Exchange best practice between partners for more interactive methods of planning and maintenance of river and water ways by working with local community groups.
